012 HISTORY

(For Both School and Private Students)

1. INTRODUCTION

This History format for the Form Two National Assessment is derived from the History Syllabus for Ordinary Secondary Education 2023, issued by the Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE). This Format focuses on the competences acquired by students at Form One and Two levels. The format emphasises a comprehensive evaluation of higher-order thinking skills as highlighted in the current syllabus.

2. MAIN COMPETENCE

The assessment will assess the extent to which students can demonstrate mastery of African history before colonialism.

3. ASSESSMENT RUBRIC

The History assessment will consist of one (1) theory paper of 2:30 hours. For students with special needs, the duration for the assessment will be 2:55 hours. The paper will be divided into sections A, B and C with a total of 10 questions. Students will be required to answer all the questions in each section. The paper will carry a total of 100 marks.

Section A will consist of two (2) objective questions. Question 1 will have 10 multiple-choice items, each worth one (1) mark, making a total of ten (10) marks. Question 2 will be a matching items question with five (5) items, each also worth one (1) mark, making a total of five (5) marks. Therefore, the section will carry fifteen (15) marks.

Section B will include seven (7) short answer questions, each carrying 10 marks. Thus, this section will carry a total of 70 marks.

Section C will consist of one (1) essay question carrying 15 marks.

4. COMPETENCES TO BE ASSESSED

The students will be assessed on the ability to demonstrate mastery of African history before colonialism. Specifically, students will be assessed on the ability to:

1 demonstrate an understanding of the concept of History and sources of historical information;

2 demonstrate an understanding of theories of the origin of human beings;

3 demonstrate an understanding of the economic, political, social and technological development in pre-colonial Africa;

4 demonstrate an understanding of interactions among African societies during the pre-colonial era; and

.5 demonstrate an understanding of the early contacts among the people of Africa, the Middle East, the Far East and Europe from the 1st century to the 19th – century.
